Let me preface this post by saying that I am not a football fan. I barely understand the rules of the game. (Outside of “each team gets four downs – or tries – to make it ten yards at which point they get another four downs, and a touchdown is worth six points” I don’t really know anything.) That said, I was kind of excited to learn that the Seattle Seahawks were going to the Bowl again (they won in 2014). Because we don’t have a pro football team here in Portland, the Seahawks are are our “local” team. Combine that with the fact that they, until recently, have been notoriously bad, and now things are pretty exciting in the NFL around here.
In case you didn’t know, Seahawk – my 11 year old – is named such on this blog because he’s such a huge fan of the Seattle team. So he was super excited when “his” team was going to the Super Bowl again. He watched the game last year, and while it was exciting that they won, it wasn’t much of a challenge in 2014.
This year, we all decided that we would watch together. It was kind of a last minute decision, actually. Because we don’t have a TV, Will did some research and found out that one of the news channels was streaming it on their website, so we all huddled into his home office and watched on the computer. I hadn’t intended to watch at all, but I must admit that once the game started, it was entrancing.
I’m not going to go into a play by play of the Super Bowl. I don’t have the football knowledge for that. I mostly just wanted to share our experience in spending time as a family doing something we normally wouldn’t do. Despite my usual indifference for the game, players, and teams, I also found myself cheering when Seattle made a touchdown, and groaning when New England did. It really was a wonderful way to spend a few hours. And when it was over, I found myself strangely disappointed that the Seahawks had lost this year.

I think it definitely makes it fun when you have a “dog in the fight” so to say. 🙂 I saw most of the last quarter. The problem I have with it is the commercials, so thankfully, my husband and extended family forwarded through them as well as half time. I wish it could just be a game without all the smut! We’ve watched many a game huddled around our computer too. (BYU Sports!)
I agree heartily! If Seattle hadn’t been in the game this year, I don’t think I would’ve watched. The kids may or may not have. Because we watched online, we pretty much saw the same 6 commercials every break, and none of them were offensive. We skipped the halftime show, too – hurried out to get a take and bake pizza for dinner 😉
